Art Collective gruppe tag: ‘Let’s Have a Performative Talk!’

Deze Akademieweek is gruppe tag uit Leipzig te gast. Wie zij zijn? ‘Daar hebben we binnen ons collectief nog altijd discussies over. Zijn we een performance-, kunstenaars- of mediagroep?’ vertelt Matthias Sterba die gruppe tag (spreek uit tee-aa-gee) in 2008 heeft opgericht. ‘Je zou kunnen zeggen dat we tijdelijke speelplekken in de publieke ruimte ontwikkelen en voorbijgangers, maar ook de gemeenschap, uitnodigen daarmee te interacteren.’

Curious to learn

In May, gruppe tag comes to the Netherlands with a four-person strong team to join in exploring how gentrification plays a role in the daily practices of artists and designers. It is the first collaboration between Bureau Ruimtekoers and the German collective. Programme makers Matthias Sterba and Alena Raab are eager with anticipation. ‘I am curious to learn what you are running into in the Netherlands. Do we have the same problems? What are your solutions? I expect that we will generate a lot of ideas!’ Alena remarks. ‘This is something new for us to try out’, says Matthias. ‘I think that we can learn a lot from each other.’

Met vier man sterk komt gruppe tag in mei naar Nederland om mee te onderzoeken hoe gentrificatie een rol speelt in de dagelijkse praktijk van kunstenaars en designers. Het is de eerste samenwerking tussen Bureau Ruimtekoers en het Duitse collectief. Programmamakers Matthias Sterba en Alena Raab hebben er zin in. ‘Ik ben benieuwd waar jullie in Nederland tegenaan lopen. Hebben we dezelfde problemen? Wat zijn jullie oplossingen? Ik verwacht dat we een heleboel ideeën opdoen!’ aldus Alena. ‘Dit is iets nieuws voor ons om uit te proberen’, zegt Matthias. ‘Ik denk dat we veel van elkaar kunnen leren.’

gruppe tag is a collective that loves to experiment. This past post-corona year, the group members created a performance in which a game was played with the themes of inside and outside, digital and live. In actual fact, gruppe tag creates a framework rather than a performance. A setting or configuration wherein anything can happen depending on the underlying theme or topic, the people that are there and the specific interactions taking place. Alena: ‘Every time again, our productions are totally different. That makes it so interesting. Also for us.’ Matthias: ‘It continues to be a challenge. We don’t have a script. We invite people into our setting. We ask of them and ourselves: let’s have a performative talk! This way, we bring all sorts of different perspectives into the performance.’

Het afgelopen post-coronajaar maakten de groepsleden een voorstelling waarin een spel wordt gespeeld met de thema’s binnen en buiten, digitaal en live. Of eigenlijk maakt gruppe tag geen voorstelling, maar een raamwerk. Een setting of kader waarbinnen van alles kan gebeuren afhankelijk van het achterliggende thema of onderwerp, de mensen die er zijn en de specifieke interacties die er plaatsvinden. Alena: ‘Onze uitvoeringen zijn iedere keer totaal anders. Dat maakt het zo interessant. Ook voor ons.’ Matthias: ‘Het is steeds opnieuw een uitdaging. We hebben geen script. We nodigen mensen uit in onze setting. We vragen hen en onszelf: let’s have a performative talk! Op deze manier brengen we allemaal verschillende perspectieven in de performance.’

Multiperspectivity

Multiperspectivity is a word that frequently comes up when Alena and Matthias speak about gruppe tag’s performances. By creating space in a safe environment and opening the doors wide for anyone with something to say, every point of view can be heard and seen, and people come together who otherwise might not be likely to meet. ‘Besides that’, Alena explains, ‘people get a chance to let themselves be heard. For some people that is quite a big thing. They are actually taken seriously.’

Multiperspectiviteit is een woord dat veelvuldig voorkomt wanneer Alena en Matthias vertellen over de performances van gruppe tag. Door ruimte te creëren in een veilige omgeving en de deuren wagenwijd open te zetten voor een ieder die iets te zeggen heeft, kan elk gezichtspunt gehoord en gezien worden en komen er mensen bij elkaar die elkaar anders wellicht niet zo snel zouden ontmoeten. ‘Bovendien’, vertelt Alena, ‘krijgen mensen een kans om zich te laten horen. Dat is voor sommigen best een groot ding. Ze worden werkelijk serieus genomen.’

That does something with people and the communities they live in. Like in Wurzen, a small municipality near Leipzig where the residents were initially reluctant to go along with gruppe tag’s plans, and the differences between the people and groups in the village seemed almost impossible to overcome. ‘And in the end, after the show, the participants started to discuss with each other how it would be if they would work together in the future! That was impressive’, Matthias reflects. Alena nods: ‘Small things can bring change. That’s what I believe in. Getting in touch with each other, doing something, participating, it all helps to create new and different experiences.’

Dat doet iets met mensen en de gemeenschappen waarin ze leven. Zoals in Wurzen, een kleine gemeente vlakbij Leipzig waar de bewoners in eerste instantie niet zo veel trek hadden om mee te doen met de plannen van gruppe tag en de verschillen tussen de mensen en groepen in het dorp haast onoverkomelijk leken. ‘En het eindigde ermee dat de deelnemers na de show met elkaar begonnen te bespreken hoe het zou zijn als ze in de toekomst zouden samenwerken! Dat was echt indrukwekkend’, vindt Matthias. Alena knikt: ‘Kleine dingen kunnen verandering brengen. Daar geloof ik in. Met elkaar in contact komen, iets doen, participeren, het helpt allemaal om nieuwe en andere ervaringen te creëren.’

Matthias absolutely agrees that experience is key. ‘Having new experiences connects people with each other and broadens your horizon.’ But he also sees the multiperspective aspect as being of great importance. ‘Not only for people, artists, participants and audience but also for the process itself. It changes everything: the subject, the aesthetic, the method and the questions surrounding it.’

De ervaring is hoofdzaak, daar is Matthias het helemaal mee eens. ‘Het hebben van nieuwe ervaringen verbindt mensen met elkaar en verbreedt je horizon.’ Maar ook het multiperspectieve deel is volgens hem van groot belang. ‘Niet alleen voor mensen, kunstenaars, deelnemers en publiek, maar ook voor het proces zelf. Het verandert alles: het onderwerp, de esthetiek, de methode en de vragen eromheen.’

Performative Talks – Exploring Interactive Modes With gruppe tag

The concept and framework that gruppe tag is creating for the Akademieweek is full-on in development, but Matthias and Alena are willing to give a glimpse behind the curtain. ‘It’s going to be about the conversation. There are all kinds of ways to start a conversation or discussion. We are going to try a number of them out and we will do that in groups, in the public space’, Matthias explains.

Alena: ‘The most important thing about these conversation interventions is that there is no moderator. The discussions are outlined with the aid of tools that help the group to have a meaningful conversation.’

Voor de Akademieweek zijn het concept en het raamwerk van gruppe tag nog volop in ontwikkeling, maar een tipje van de sluier willen Matthias en Alena alvast oplichten. ‘Het zal gaan om het gesprek. Er zijn allerlei manieren om een conversatie of discussie te beginnen. We gaan er een aantal van uitproberen en we doen dat in groepsverband, in de openbare ruimte’, legt Mattias uit.

Alena: ‘Het belangrijkste van die gespreksinterventies is dat er geen moderator is. De gesprekken worden omkaderd met behulp van tools die de groep helpen een waardevolle conversatie te hebben.’

In just a short while gruppe tag will travel to Utrecht. Matthias is looking forward to it. ‘It is fun to do new things. Not just in terms of our own project, but then I also mean the workshops. I am really curious about the one by Tina Lenz and also the Anti-Gentrification role-playing game by Cultural Workers Unite. And beyond that, I am very keen to see the Ruimtekoers world in real life!’

Nog even en dan reist gruppe tag af naar Utrecht. Matthias verheugt zich erop. ‘Het is leuk om nieuwe dingen te doen. Niet alleen wat betreft ons eigen project, maar dan bedoel ik ook de workshops. Ik ben erg benieuwd naar die van Tina Lenz en ook naar het Anti-Gentrification rollenspel van Cultural Workers Unite. En verder wil ik heel graag de Ruimtekoerswereld in het echt zien!’
